Which USCIS forms use this photo?

The 2×2 inch portrait is used across many filings, including green card (such as Form I-485) and naturalization (Form N-400). Always follow the photo instructions on the form you are filing — they are not identical.

How recent does the photo have to be?

The I-485, N-400, and I-765 instructions say “taken recently” and do not give a number of months. If the form you are filing sets a shorter window, follow that form.

Do I get prints or a digital file?

The digital plan is the JPEG. The bundle adds a 4×6 inch sheet with several 2×2 copies and cut marks, which you print on photo paper.

Is this an official USCIS photo?

Rules

I-485, N-400 (applicants outside the United States), and I-765 ask for two identical 2 × 2 inch color photos. Head, top of hair to chin, is 1 inch to 1⅜ inches (50% to 68.75%). Eyes are 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo (56.25% to 68.75%).

Background is white to off-white. Paper is thin and glossy, unmounted and unretouched. The head is bare unless a religious denomination requires a covering. Print your name and A-Number lightly on the back.

Those instructions do not state glasses, expression, or lighting. We do not fail the photo for glasses on USCIS's behalf. Taking them off is the passport-style suggestion, and the checker only warns. There is no USCIS digital file-size cap in these instructions. Our JPEG is 600 × 600, the print raster.

Do

Read the photo age on your exact form before you shoot. Thirty days is common.
Use a white wall and even light.
Print the sheet at 100% scale if the form wants paper photos.
Use the same likeness you will show at a biometrics appointment.

Don't

Do not treat a passport-style suggestion as a sentence in the USCIS instructions. Glasses are not mentioned there.
Do not reuse a photo from a previous filing if your appearance has changed.
Do not fit-to-page when you print. That shrinks the 2×2 copies.
Do not retouch the print. The instructions say unretouched.
