Rules
The online renewal file is portrait, height 1.5 times the width, at least 1200 × 1800 and no larger than 3000 × 4500. We save 1800 × 2700. File size is 200 KB to 5 MB. Chin to crown is 45% to 50% of the height. JPEG is reported and was not confirmed as the only allowed type.
A printed passport photo is 50 mm wide by 70 mm high, face 31–36 mm from chin to crown. The bundle's sheet uses that crop (1181 × 1654 at 600 dpi). On one print, the photographer writes the date and the studio address. Adult renewals do not need a guarantor.
Colour versus black and white, the exact background wording, glasses, head coverings, and the age of the photo were not confirmed from a full canada.ca page when this spec was compiled. We keep a plain light background and warn on glare. Do not use this file for an IRCC visa or PR card.
Do
- Stand well off the wall so there is no shadow behind you.
- On the digital file, keep the face at 45–50% of the height. The print sheet uses 31–36 mm on its own.
- If you wear glasses, clean them and kill the reflection before you shoot.
- Use a commercial photographer's stamp rules if your application still wants a guarantor note on the back of a print. We cannot stamp a print for you.
Don't
- Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses.
- Do not smile or tilt your head.
- Do not crop to a square. The online file is 2:3, and the print is 50 × 70 mm.
- Do not submit a photo that hides the edges of your face behind hair.
