Rules
The upload is a square JPEG from 200 × 200 to 900 × 900 pixels, 200 KB or less. No official minimum file size. We save 600 × 600, inside that square range, and keep it at or under 200,000 bytes.
The MHA portal FAQ asks for a plain light color, not white, and no border. An older Embassy of India Washington FAQ says white. We follow the portal and only offer light greys. The print spec (Photo-Spec PDF) is 51 × 51 mm with the head 25–35 mm. “80% coverage of face” is not defined, so we do not measure 80%.
Prescription glasses should be worn if you normally wear them. No glare, and no tinted lenses unless there is a medical reason. Do not retouch or soften the photo. The signature is a separate JPEG, aspect about 3:1 (width three times height), from 200 × 67 to 900 × 300, also 200 KB or less, on white.
Do
- Use the light grey background. The portal that receives the file says not white.
- Keep the head in the 25–35 mm print band. That is about half to 69% of the square.
- Wear clear prescription glasses if you normally do, and kill the reflection.
- Crop the signature on white paper, inside the box, and download that JPEG with the portrait.
Don't
- Do not upload a pure-white US passport crop. The MHA portal says the background should not be white.
- Do not exceed 900 × 900 pixels or 200 KB.
- Do not retouch, soften, or add a border.
- Do not use tinted glasses, or a signature that is not 3:1.
