Rules
German missions in the United States ask for two identical recent biometric photos, and they ask you not to cut the photos yourself. The Federal Foreign Office sample sheet is 35×45 mm. The face, chin to crown excluding hair, is 32–36 mm, with a tolerated band of 27–40 mm.
The background is one bright colour, ideally neutral grey, with no pattern and no shadow. Clear glasses are allowed if the eyes are unobstructed. A religious head covering can be allowed when the face from chin to forehead stays visible.
Inside Germany, since 1 May 2025, paper photos are not accepted. The photo has to come from a certified photographer or a PointID capture at the office. This site cannot produce that domestic photo.
